oh-shit-hustle

In my mind, the mornings should be so easy.  Smooth and easy.  I am organized and have everything ready the night before so it's not as if lack of preparation is the issue.

Every morning begins the same way.  The big kids come into my room when they wake up, anytime between 7:00 and 7:25am.  Lauren has been awake since 7:00am usually but she plays quietly in her crib so there is no need for me to get up before that.  The big kids crawl in bed with me and we snuggle for just a couple minutes.  We talk about what the day has in store for us, whatever.  Then it's breakfast, get dressed, brush hair, brush teeth, put on shoes, and leave.  I make a hot breakfast 2 or 3 times a week, otherwise it's cereal, fruit, granola bar - whatever.  Their clothes are out the night before.  Their shoes are always to be put back in the same place every night when they take them off.  Yet, still, the mornings are kind of crazy.  Why?  We have to be out the door at 8:20am so we have usually 45 minutes at least for all of these things to take place.  It seems to me that should be plenty of time.

Since I have everything prepared, I tell them that I am there to help them get ready for school, not to do it for them.  I only have so much encouragement and patience and every morning it's used up by about 7:45am.  Just one day I'd like to be spared the oh-shit-hustle at 8:15am after 30 minutes of telling them to get it together.

I can't wait for the morning when I'm not standing at the door saying, "I'm leaving!  Is anyone coming with me?"

Are mornings crazy for you, too?

  1. umm. yes. our mornings are insane! it doesn't matter how prepared i am the night before...liam always manages to take a poop as soon as we are walking out the door and wyatt is ALWAYS hungry just as we leave even though i JUST fed him. i can't prepare for those things! at least 1-2 times a week, i seriously contemplate keeping everyone home from school just so we don't have to deal with the morning routine. ha!

  2. I too, have everything ready the night before, and I can even take my kids to daycare in their pj's. So, all I have to do is get them up, change their diapers, and put their coats on(we live in MN, so this means coats, boots, hats, mittens, etc) and get them in the car. STILL, we manage to be late every. single. day. Ugh!

  3. i wish i could say it was like this for me, but honestly its not and i dont prepare the night before. i do have to say, though, that i have a 9 year old that now sets his own alarm and gets himself up, dressed, and fed so i only have one to take care of. lakota is a morning person so she is easy in the morning. i cant imagine trying to get 3 kids out of the house. kudos to you.
