I'm right and you're wrong

I've written before about how William is a chatterbox and always has been.  It's so tough because I find myself saying, "William, not now."  Or, "William, you have to be quiet for a few minutes."  It probably sounds a little harsh being that he's only 3 and that he's just sharing and verbalizing and processing his thoughts but GAAAHHH!  I'm kind about how I say it and it's for my sanity and his well being that I tell him to hush now and then.

Then there are times like this morning when we just sit and have a snack and chat.  We had a brief conversation I caught on camera and we remained on one topic.  That is happening more often now, the whole staying-on-topic thing.  Our conversations and his thoughts are becoming a little more mature in nature and we're able to stay on topic which is nice.  Before he'd switch topic midsentence and because I'm super awesome I always somehow managed to hang on and just swing right on into it but it's nice to not have to do that.

For reference purposes, when William refers to Fred, he's referring to one of those water walker bugs.  You know, one of these:

There was one in the house the other day and when the kids flipped out, Chris said it was his friend visiting for the day.  He named him Fred and before bed, Fred had to go back outside.  It grossed me out but I put on a good show.  "Oh, yeah, Fred!  Good to see you.  Hang out a while."  Gah.

Anyway, here's part of a brief conversation William and I had this morning.  Lauren was napping, Drew was at school, and William had just kicked my ass in three games of War.  I will really miss these Tuesday and Thursday mornings next year when he goes to school 5x a week in the morning.  In the meantime, we'll have great single-topic conversations and I'll continue to probably get my ass kicked in card games.

  1. I remember thinking, when Skyler was three, "kid, do you ever stop talking?" I hate to say that we still have those days. She's still frequently a stream-of-consciousness talker. Zack is my quiet contemplative one. When he talks, he's been thinking about it for awhile.
